Here's one limitation: a ticket has to be completely used within one year of its issuance. If you book a round-trip today for outbound May // return June, you can make later changes after travel starts to the return portion, but the return can never be later than mid-January (because your ticket was issued in mid-January and is valid for one year from date of issuance).
For undecided travel dates it would still be best to book for dates as late as possible, wouldn't it? One can then always change to an earlier date (of available) but is less likely to forget.
