IMO, one of the best things to do is get a friend/relative that trusts you to "loan" you the miles from American Express Membership Rewards (transferring into your Delta account). And, you can "pay back" the favor at a later date.
Also, since AFAIK, you cannot "hold" awards any longer; just because your 300K award is available today, there is no guarantee it will be available tomorrow, or still at the end of the month.
