I board with just one item - a computer bag when traveling for work, a backpack when traveling for leisure. No jacket, coat, etc, always just the one item. That item goes in the overhead. I *always* check my suitcase.

As others have noted, if Delta would enforce the carry on rules it would go a long way towards addressing the issue. Rollaboards, IMO, belong in the baggage hold.
