Yes, this would clearly defeat that purpose...
The are some classic 'Grand Dame' type hotels in SF, not sure if they would suit your taste.
Alternatively, has anybody here stayed at the Fairmont Heritage Place in Ghiradelli Square? (don't yell at me vuittons!!)

Location is good for lots of San Francisco tourist activities. Suite would be nice with a child.
