I lay it in the seat so I will notice that its still there or at least someone around me will remind that I left something. I haven't lost a phone or tablet, but in 2013 I did find two tablets and one dumbphone in seat pockets (all item given to head FA).
My personal loss prevention method is as follows: When seated, i normally put my phone, Ultrabook, Etymotic earphones and (sometimes) my iGo power supply.
I keep a small pen and some post-it notes in a pocket of the Ultrabook's slipcover. When I have finished putting everything in the seat pocket, i write the number of items i have placed in the seat pocket on the post-it. When the time comes to shut down and pack up, I check the post-it to be sure that, if I wrote the number 4 on the post-it, I retrieve 4 items from the seat pocket.
It may be too much hassle for some, but my loss rate is 0, and it's now automatic reflex for me.
