Its better to lose -$50 than say -$100 per seat. The whole point of bulk tickets is to stem the loss from an empty flight.
Obviously whatever decision UA made regarding PQD is based on revenue maximization. Obviously the OP deserves PQD regardless; but meh i understand the UA side as well.
