Thanks for all the responses -- they are much appreciated. I hadn't thought about QR or about going via CTU (I will look into the cost of these).
I had assumed that using VS was going to be most sensible but I am still quite struck that so few people have spoken up for BA, which was my main alternative. I guess the reality is that it is going to be a miserable flight regardless!
