I did see routing to JFK, MSP and DTW appear as options when I searched using the Change Flights button.
LAX-SAN nets you an extra segment and 500 extra MQMs. Ideal routing here for most mileage is probably MIA-JFK-LAX-SAN which would come in around 4000 mi.

Downloadable timetable lists routings through ATL, DTW, MSP and JFK for MIA-SAN.
