Thanks Aviatrix. XXX might be LED or SVO. Still not sure. It won't be a Schengen country for sure. Maybe LHR as Russians with onward tickets can enter for 24 hours.

Your response tells me what I need to know. Thank you very much. Ah, the power of FT at work is a beautiful thing to behold....

He can transit airside without a visa. This means that he can transit through BRU if he can check his baggage all the way, or if he travels without checked baggage.

If he was travelling on a through ticket he would be able to check his baggage all the way. If, as you indicate, he is on separate tickets then he may or may not be able to check his baggage all the way - it depends on the airlines concerned. He will need to contact his first airline and ask about this, and if the answer is "yes" he should get it from them in writing because check-in agents don't always know the rules. And he will also need to present his onward boarding flight before boarding his flight to BRU because he won't be let on board without it.

Oh, and where is this "XXX"? If it's in another Schengen country then you will have disregard everything I've just said because you can't fly from one place in Schengen to another place in Schengen without entering Schengen - so he would definitely need a visa in that case.
