In the past I've always done the train/tube option, but schlepping around from terminal to station and from train to tube - even with just a carryon is a pain. My non-expert opinion is that (a) with anything more than a tiny bag or (b) if more than one person then I would definitely hire a car.

Cost seems equivalent to the HEx and tube combination ... am I reading that right?
