Obviously varies by time of day, but let's say leaving LHR about 10am on a weekday ?

Appreciate the knowledge of those who have tried both.
With completely clear traffic it's about a 40 minute drive down the M4, through Hammersmith/Shepherds Bush and along the Marylebone Road to Kings Cross. By 10am the worst of the queues into London will have died down, but there will still be some hotspots (bottom on the M4, through Hammersmith and coming off the Westway) so you'd probably be looking at closer to an hour.

Taking the tube is bang on one hour. Obviously doesn't provide the same comfort or privacy as the tube, but is my preferred option as unless there are tube issues no traffic to worry about.

Another option is the Heathow Express to Paddington (15 minutes) and then the Circle/Hammersmith & City line to Kings Cross (another 15 minutes), so around 40 minutes in total with the change at Paddington.
