That's not even close to the bottom line. That was your decision.
I would've never paid the upgrades, and I'd have called in and escalated to get my seats back or even forced JFK-SFO in C - you chose another option to placate the wife on your birthday.
How "Jeff stole" the money when you chose to pay is beyond me.
(Of course, this doesn't excuse UA's horrible computer system and lack of agent ability to fix things. But it was OP's decision to upgrade).
