What are you expecting? Rose petals on the bed ir something more? I think that if expectations are managed then thete is nothing wrong with a phone call or email letting them know that it's a special occasion. On the other hand, no one wants the story about how they didn't do anything for you.
Yes.. not sure what is accomplished letting the hotel know of a special occasion. My gut feeling is hotels couldn't care less. Plus, hotels are reluctant to do anything, as it would mean its a cost to them.
