I never convert to a free card. I don't do much merging either because I don't want to have active cards with a $50-60K limit.

My credit score is as high as it needs to be. Over 750.

Don't overthink things. Apply for cards, get cards, meet spend, get bonus, go on nice trip first class. Repeat.
I am willing to see things your way, but "don't worry about it" is not really a viewpoint that is constructive to this conversation.

Besides, canceling a card does not "clear the decks to churn" any more than converting a card. It is the same effect. In fact, you don't even really need to close/convert the card at all and can still churn it, although this is probably marginally less effective in case there is a human review.
