There are hundreds of hotels in NY many of which would be cheaper (and some more expensive) than that.

'in the area' not sure what area you mean by that. NYC covers a large area but I'm guessing you want to stay in Manhattan though., You need to be a bit more specific about what area you are looking to stay in and what hotel facilities you want.

what were you expecting to pay per night?
That rate sounds like midtown Hilton for a single king room (guessing because OP refers to HHonors). I stayed at Grand Hyatt around Halloween last year and it was about 350 per night for a single king "deluxe" room.
