My brother rents out his Brooklyn apartment whenever he and his wife go out of town and have a good arrangement set up. Read the reviews on the apartments and you can avoid any problems.
Be careful with AirBnB. The vast majority of the apartments they rent in NYC are rented illegally, and the state is going after them.
