when I was E, I would grab the reward seat and match the routing with revenue seat. sometimes the matching revenue seat is cheaper on UA so I always check both sites; this messes up the linked PNR strategy but I didn't usually stress over that for NA flights. until the word 'polar vortex' entered the vocabulary...
