I am certainly not a frequent flyer but will have some miles to upgrade a United flight to business class from BKK to IAD. The only choice I have is ANA to NRT. Then I start looking on United's site which shows service to BKK only to find his thread which explains why I cant find this service later this year. I was hoping someone could help with these questions since the upgrade costs $600 plus 30k miles.
1. Am I correct that the upgrade wont be accepted on ANA? It is a long flight to NRT so I would hate to waste it.
2. If so, is there an alternative by connecting through a closer location like HKG or Saigon?

The upgrade will not apply to the NH segment.
There are other options, particularly through HKG, but that will require an extra stop in the US since UA does not fly IAD-HKG nonstop. Also, the UA flight times are not ideal for an HKG connection to BKK. You could also try IAD-NRT-SIN-BKK, with only the last leg on non-UA metal.
