I think my oldest daughter was 5 months old when we took her on her first flight, although it was halfway across the US and not the world.

My tip is to keep the child's head up during take off and landing. This will keep his/her Eustachian tubes from closing due to the pressure in the cabin which can be very painful for a baby.
