Just do random same day changes, even for a flight 15 min later. As long as you're willing to pay the $75, you have a great chance at getting a free upgrade. Or, whenever you see a weather alert, change flights, the odds of getting into M or Latitude are phenomenal if you pick a busy flight. You also have a good chance of getting into Z if you were already upgraded!!
I don't usually book fares lower than M, so it's not as useful. It was nice when $75 moved my V YVR-YUL into Y though
When I was rebooked for a canceled flight, they kept me in R. I was hoping I'd get the 50% bonus, and worried that I'd lose the upgrade, but everything worked out.
