Dumb question. When upgrading where there are two sectors one of which has F while the other only has J for purposes of calculating the number of Asia Miles required do they use only the leg that has F or both legs?

For example MLE-HKG-SFO and return would I need 85,000 miles (HKG-SFO) or do they use the mileage MLE-SFO even though the MLR-HKG leg doesn't have first?
