It's very unlikely that you're going to get anything close to a reliable connection to the ground from your cell, since you're going to spend the entire time hopping from tower to tower. This means they're probably going to put mini-cells on the planes for your phone to connect to -- likely the airline's own. That means roaming. Very expensive roaming. That's what's likely to prevent people from even using it in the first place.

If it costs any less than those old in-seat sat phones nobody used, I'll be very surprised.
