Lost my wallet right before a flight a few months back. I had my phone which had a scan of my passport and 600 other ways to identify myself. While those documents made my conversations with TSA cordial, they were unable to use them to verify my ID. They actually had a procedure to follow that resulted in me answering questions based on data from DMV, and Credit Bureaus (registered vehicles, recent address history, etc). They did say that a credit card or some forms of mail with my name on it would have assisted in verifying my identity.
While I know we all love to hate TSA, in my case they actually were very polite and professional and got me on my way in about 10 minutes.
Had an experience like this with my teenage son when he was looking at colleges. He lost his school ID (his only picture ID at the time) on the trip. It took 3 hours (glad we arrived early) of discussion before the TSA authorized him to fly home. They were polite, professional and very thorough. The supervisor who finally gave the go-ahead told me it would make some extra paperwork for him but he took responsibility for the clearance. I thought TSA did a great job and the security screening process was anything but a joke.
