I'm absolute noob on these portable routers, however after reading through the pages, have narrowed it down to the 2 smallest ones;
Asus 330NUL and Edimax BR6258NL
I read a comment on another site that the Edimax doesnt handle portal pages in hotels, ie when you have to bring the hotel site up and either buy time, or type in the room and password etc..
Secondly, I'm using it with a 13" ultrabook, so may like the idea of ethernet connection through the USB.
I kind of think that the comment from a different site is wrong regarding the Edimax, as I think on here people have made reference to it.
I'm mainly going to use it in hotels to use ultrabook, ipad and possibly chromecast at some times.
Will both of the above suit my needs, or is one better than the other?
Thanks in advance.
I'm sitting in a Holiday Inn Express right now as I read your post. I was using a MiFi, but just to provide a rock solid data point, I logged into my Edimax BR6258NL. I always travel with the Edimax BR6258NL, since I have a MacBook Air, and the Edimax doubles as a wired ethernet port connector, as you mentioned. Plus, carrying the Edimax takes up about as much extra space as a few Qtips.
I fired up the Edimax, and told my MacBook to connect to it. It's software automagically popped up a configuration page, which walked me through a step by step process to log onto the internet. I did nothing more than click on selection boxes...for example: "wired mode" or "wisp mode (wireless internet)". It lead me to the hotel portal page, where I easily entered the necessary credentials, and I'm writing this post via my Edimax in WISP mode using the hotel wifi.
Furthermore, my phone can now see the Edimax ssid, and I can surf the net on my phone via the Edimax - without having to re-enter the hotel portal page credentials. Ditto for my Nexus 7.
The Edimax BR6258NL can do exactly what you're looking for it to do.
