As the vast majority of my travel is on Star Alliance airlines in paid J, my boarding pass is all I've been using or needing to gain lounge entry. Your point, however, is well taken and I did use to carry my SE card around all the time, even when I wasn't travelling, but that was when more of my travel was domestic....
