I've got a raft of cards that I switch in and out of my wallet depending upon where I'm travelling and on what airlines. As the vast majority of my travel is on Star Alliance airlines in paid J, my boarding pass is all I've been using or needing to gain lounge entry. Similarly, when I've done my minimum AC metal flights it's been in paid J and again, my BP gets me into the MLL.
Your point, however, is well taken and I did use to carry my SE card around all the time, even when I wasn't travelling, but that was when more of my travel was domestic....
A domestic "F" (J) BP isn't good enough to get into the United Club either
Your card is more useful in the US than Canada. But United agents can (and are usually willing to) manually look up your status. "JF-123456789*AC"
