It was a complicated situation (as traveling often is). After pulling an all-nighter to prepare for my 6AM cross-country flight, I finally landed in Orlando the next evening. Between finishing up at the office and packing, hadn't really considered the nuances of my trip after landing (driving tolls don't rank high when preparing for a 2-week trip). I neglected to bring spare cash (I don't normally carry it) or a debit card. In hindsight, I really wished I had. Although I had previous experience with Hertz's toll policy, it didn't dawn on me until I was leaving the lot. At that point it was too late do consider my options from the comfort of the airport.

At this point, there was very little I could do to get cash. As I said, nearly all roads leaving MCO have tolls, and my GPS simply wouldn't give me a route without them. Without a debit card, I forgot how difficult it was to acquire cash. I actually under-stated how difficult it was (it eventually took over 2 hours), as no store would provide cashback from a credit card. Eventually, a clever relative realized he could transfer money to my Google Wallet account, where I could get it out. But to save [what I thought would be] $70, that's what it took.

Now I realize that the whole situation could have easily been avoided if I simply had cash on-hand, but that's not really the point. The systems and infrastructure were in place to allow me to travel easily without it. However, Hertz's unreasonable PayPass policy turned what could have been a great customer service experience into a frustrating ordeal. Charging a $25 fee to process $4.50 in toll expenses (RT) is simply unreasonable.
