I was not spending any time in Orlando, except to arrive and depart - the rest of the time was spent along the coasts with no toll roads involved. However, when traveling away from MCO, nearly all routes involve toll roads.
To get to Kissimmee (my initial destination) required only $2.25 in tolls, but unfortunately to use the toll system, Hertz would require I pay them $70 for the privilege ($5 X 14 days)! If Hertz would only charge for the days it is used, perhaps it would have been reasonable (if still not ideal) - $10. Instead, I was left to find a back-road out of the airport, where I could find my way to a nearby town to access an ATM (with no help from GPS which kept trying to route me back on the toll roads). The ordeal added over an hour to my already wearying trip.
And the worst part is that even when paying cash through one of the tolls, the camera still snapped a photo of my plate, perhaps making all the effort for naught. I believe Hertz made a bad decision here in sacrificing customer service for extortion.
Why didnt you just get cash at the airport and opt out of platepass?
