Don't forget National's target audience is the business traveler and many of them (myself included) work for companies that have a corporate rates with National so the sticker price may be higher if you don't have that same benefit. I find that National tends to be slightly cheaper than Avis and slightly more expensive than Hertz (the other 2 places we have corporate rates). I've always been partial to the EA which is why I've always gone National.
