But they made me aware my return flight will become invalid if I do so and do not take the one originally booked.
Is there any chance that I can change my flight when I arrive in LAX and keep the return intact?
I am BA Gold in case that makes any difference. The tickets are booked in WT and WT+ and the long distances are upgraded to CW with Avios

As a GCH you should be able to move the flight on AA at the gate for no cost and not lose your return as it will be the same ticket. Trying to do it early however will cost.
Of course at the gate is space available though!
