I am hoping to fly from Melbourne MEL to Rome FCO later this year. There is an Etihad flight the entire way through stopping at Abu Dhabi with no frequent flyers seats available.(EY 461 - EY 7065 / AZ 853)

However i can book the first half of the leg on Etihad MEL -> AUH using virgin velocity points (EY 461)

And the second half AUH -> FCO using qantas ff points as the second half of the leg is dual badged with Alitalia. (AZ 853)

So my question is if i book both of them separately will I be able to check the entire way through from Melbourne? Or will Etihad in melbourne complain that the second half of the leg is Alitalia even though its a duel badged flight?
