One answer is to use them on hotel bookings (which I presume is allowed for US BAEC members). You can simply burn up your Avios in one fell swoop, or perhaps slice them off, 1000 at a time, to leverage rates similar to corporate deals. However BA hotels are sometimes available at reasonable rates when other sources dry up. Ditto with car hire.
