Quite true. With all the MD-80 retirements, the JT8D overhaul market has all but collapsed. Plenty of available spare engines (and parts thereof) on the market. That said, I suspect AA has sufficent spares. Aircraft will probably only be AOG for a few days.
A new JT8D is not an option, even if AA wanted to buy one (which I am confident that they do not). They went out of production years ago.
