Spoke with a few agents, finally confirmed the rules:

$300 change fee, I can only rebook once, and it has to be a ticket with equal or higher value... it doesn't have fare class restriction but the "equal or higher" requirements basically dictate I have to fly international...

I guess the option is either an premium fare MR to an exotic destination, or just forget about it.
