I can understand that the comment may grate on some people but in reality, it's not so hard to attain OWE even if you are flying discount Y if you are flying quite a lot. My first year of OWE was from short haul discount Y (Australian domestic). I didn't feel like I was flying that much to be honest and it was certainly much less flying than I do now, although admittedly I rarely fly Y nowadays.

I think it's natural for people to feel that their own flying pattern is the most deserving. But the benefots of status really come at the airport rather than in the plane. The priority check-in saves queuing and the use of a lounge makes the experience very much more pleasant. Plus, the priority boarding also saves queuing.
Ah now, the final point, i.e. priority boarding... I wish they sorted that one out properly!
