I have had success calling the PM line and nicely asking the agent to force appropriate inventory open to allow SDC to the nonstop instead (it had to be escalated to a supervisor in that instance). In that case, the nonstop was a half-empty plane, and one of the flights in the connecting itinerary was soliciting volunteers for VDB at OLCI.
