The W and the Westin (which are close to each other) are about a 1/2 mile away from the action and are in more of a business area sandwiched between old Montreal and St Catherine's. To put this all in perspective, th W and the Sheraton are about a mile apart.

So, if location is the prime factor and you're going during the cold season, I think Le Centre Sheraton may be the better option. If you'd rather stay in a swanky/funky W and be willing to walk an extra 10 minutes to all the bars, the W will work.

I've been going to Montreal (for Pleasure) yearly for over 10 years and know the city well. The Sheraton is a big, bustling, 37ish floor hotel with lots of buzz (and a good club lounge). Rooms are cookie-cutter but if you can score a suite, it would make a big difference. The W is the typical W with nice suites, good service, and that W vibe. The Westin is a little quieter, upscale, and has nice rooms. All three are good properties.
Thanks for taking the time out to write a long thorough review! I'll look into the Sheraton. We are going in the summer so the walk won't be bad.

You may not have to leave the premises at all. The W has a pretty cool party vibe and the whole lobby bar area turns into a club with a very attractive young crowd milling around.

On my of my stays here, there was exactly that (bachelor's party) going on in the suite next door. I said hi from the balcony (top floor suites have balcony that sort of can look over) and I was invited to join the party

That's awesome. Did you get upgraded as a Platinum to that suite?
