You couldn't use a JR pass for a Nozomi train back in 2002 (my first two visits to Japan).

Despite other trains (notably the Mizuho) also a being excluded I find that the JR pass is far LESS restrictive now than it has ever been back then as so many of the options ten years ago involved enduring carriage rides with chain smokers.
