It must have been even longer than 10 years, the first Nozomi trains have been running since 1992. I don't remember if one could ride the Nozomi back then using a JR Pass, but certainly since the introduction of the 700 trainsets in 1999 the JR Pass has been off limits for the Nozomi.

Why is that, I don't know. Why do airlines have different fare buckets? Why do hotels have different room categories?
