Just relating my experience of earlier this week. I reserved a mini van months ahead of time at the Anaheim location to use for one day with return to airport. I had my family (6 adults) with me. Late the day before, while we were at Disneyland. I received a call from the Anaheim location saying that the "airport was not going to send us any minivans". I asked if I could get to the airport, would I be able to pick up a minivan there? - answer no.

Possibly overbooking - possibly someone not turning in their car...who knows for sure... I was pleased though that the local Hertz location took a proactive approach and called me ahead of time. I was not happy that I had to rent two cars to get my family to Universal and then to the airport.

Do you think if I had prepaid I would have had a better chance that the minivan would have been waiting for me? (Note I am Gold Club and rent about 4 or 5 times a year..not a frequent renter)
