As I said above, yes some seats are pre-blocked for PPS and some also for Kris Gold until last minute (they hold them also after OLCI opens).
I usually book just a few days ahead, sometimes on the same day that i fly. The front rows in coach are usually almost empty and available and i have no issues to get a decent seat in row 31 (on A330) 32 or 33.
