It has being while I dealt with definition of “connection” in international situations, but in your situation after arriving at NRT at 2:30 p.m. on JL 9 from ORD, there is same day connection available to BKK from NRT. TG 677 departing NRT at 5:50 p.m. and JL 707 departing NRT at 6:05 p.m.

If there is same day connection available, then it is possible that an airline will define your situation as stop over at NRT, not connection at NRT. Under such situation it is possible that an airline will not through check the baggage regardless of interline agreement or not. This is another point need to be considered under your situation.
