So I booked the Mercure since I have some Accor points but after reading some reviews on Tripadvisor I decided 9,500 yen (room only unrestricted) was too much and booked the Richmond for 7,400 yen (room only) instead. I'll report back how I find the place.
I should add that the 9,000yen or so I generally paid was for two in a room. The bathroom isn't as nice as the Narita Hilton and the towels are thin but the bed itself is fine nor is the room claustrophobic. If it's a single room you are after probably better to look and book elsewhere.

As well as the Comfort and Richmond there is also a newly opened APA Hotel on the same side of the tracks (Tokyo bound, away from the airport) as the Richmond Hotel. However, as Abraxis mentioned, there's a stairwell outside the station that goes over to the "right" side of the tracks. If have lots of luggage you can have it delivered directly to the airport by takkyubin service a couple of days earlier from a previous hotel but you'll be paying a 600yen or so surcharge for the airport service fee.
I'm personally curious about the APA Hotel's sento (gender segregated public bath) but this feature doesn't appeal to everyone.
