I'm not aware of anything special happening in Jan.

There is a place called lomas de lachay about 1.5-2 hours from Lima where you can go camping and they have deers and birds.

Chosica is a popular resort area for Limeņos. Its about 1 hour from the city and you can get there in combi for less than $1 so it could be good for a day trip. Or Lunahuana is another day trip idea (http://peruturismototal.blogspot.com...na-canete.html)

I thought the trip to Islas Ballestas was boring and generally wouldn't recommend it (especially since its 3-4 hours in bus), but if you want to see penguins & sea lions, thats the spot. If you go there, I'd visit Huacachina for some sandboarding.
