If it were any other day they may have done the logical thing. I suspect because it was Christmas they were shooting for all or nothing - either they get home on Christmas day or they don't and favoring the small chance to make it tipped the scale a lot farther because of that - or not.

They were also hoping their *A partner would help them out of a jam because it was Christmas but that didn't happen. Lesson learned. Stuff happens and you have to look out for yourself when you travel on UA (and probably any other airline too).
