The way this works is that you will have this experience and swear "never to fly again" on each major carrier, and eventually you'll have to start over again. Such is life.
We love Qantas. We love Emirates. Korean Air is great. EVA, Singapore, JAL, Air New Zealand, Alaska and plenty of others are more than good enough. Heck, even the very budget AirAsia was head and shoulders above United.
Maybe we've been lucky, but no other airline bothered me so much in my memory both ways on long flights. We have enough other choices to avoid United. There is only one airline on our blacklist, so we should be just fine.
