It seems to me that a very large percentage of people use roller bags of some sort. There are a minority of people with special requirements, for example hanging bags that are folded in half that will not fit in the sizer but are still compliant. I would rather that GAs be trained to treat these latter items as exceptions, than to ignore the problem all together and allow people to bring anything that they can drag to the gate and have 10% of other people's smaller bags not fit.

I guess this wasn't an issue when airlines didn't charge for checked bags, but it is what it is and I guess we have to live with the revenue model of modern airlines.
