Agreed that flying in/out of LIN/MXP is not ideal for this trip, but maybe it was booked on the Wideroe fare. Benefit of the doubt, etc.
Agree that trying to do Tuscany on this schedule is tough. Not really the season to visit wineries either, I'd think, though I've never tried.
Some alternatives I'd consider:
- Stay in Milano. There are a few worthwhile sites/museums, and while it's probably not good for more than ~2 days if you're not into high-end shopping/fashion, that's about how much time you've got anyway.
- Spend 2 days in Torino or Florence. No car needed.
- Rent a car and spend a day each in a couple of towns in Lombardia/Emiglia-Romagna -- maybe pick from Cremona, Parma, Mantova, Ferrara, Ravenna, etc.
- If your idea of romantic includes snow-capped mountains and obscure border-region dialects, spending 2 days driving around the Valle d'Aosta is unbeatable (and closer and more compact than Tuscany).
