The reimbursement of the cost incurred for repairing the piece of baggage that was damaged. IMO, anything else would be a commercial gesture and that would depend on whether the ticket (I assume it was a single ticket) was issued by AF or DL.

In Summation:
-My bag was lost for a total of 2 full days
Distressing, but nothing special.
-Air France luggage phone line in Europe as well as the US couldn't provide accurate details throughout these 2 days...also the Delta Diamond desk was oh NO help...
If the piece of baggage could not be located, that's not surprising.
-My luggage was damaged when I received it in Hanover December 25th!!
Distressing, but these things happen.
-Ultimately, my bag sat for 2 days in Paris (I arrived into Paris at 9:00am Dec 23rd and the bag left Paris, finally on its way to Hanover on flight 1538 at 9:50am on Dec 25th)
You did mention that it was an assumption on your part. But you probably had grounds to make that assumption.
-I had to purchase clothes etc in order to get me through these 2 days
And that will be the basis for your reimbursement.
-I had to go retrieve my luggage as well, which also incurred train fees to and from the airport
You did mention that it was your choice to go to the airport.

Overall, it was a distressing experience for you and your family at a special time, but I am afraid that what you experienced is not uncommon.
