Because they're not on the same ticket you're technically not protected. However in my experience delta ground agents have been more than understanding to change itineraries when a delay/cancellation caused me to miss the next. A 24 hour delay returning from San Francisco caused them to rebook my next trip forward a day at no cost because I would not have made it in time!
