My initial read on OP's post is that they booked two separate trips--LAS-SEA, and SEA-LAX (i.e., two separate tickets). That seems to make the most sense based on what they reported the agent saying. If this is the case, the OP wasn't cheating, but certainly played the game and lost. Just bad luck.

That said, if the OP did in fact buy one ticket LAS-LAX connecting in SEA, then I'm just as confused by the phone agent's words as the OP.
